ÃÛÑ¿ÊÓƵ Police Department to Move into New Facility

Published: October 7, 2024.

The ÃÛÑ¿ÊÓƵ Police Department will consolidate its personnel and operations, formerly spread over three locations on the Romeoville campus, to a single facility in West Hall. This change is being implemented after years of planning an analysis to determine an optimal location for LUPD that will provide enhanced operational efficiency, streamline inter-department communication and training, and effectively maintain the safety and security of the campus.

The West Hall police facility will include: the 24-hour police communications center, an after-hours service window, reception area, interview, booking and report writing rooms, men’s and women’s locker rooms, secure police records and evidence storage, equipment storage, Jet’s (the LUPD comfort dog) outdoor oasis, police vehicle parking, administrative offices, a training room, and more.

West Hall will be open to the public during normal business hours for walk-in questions, consultations, or to file a police report. After hours, the communications center will have a publicly accessible service window open 24-hours a day in the main entrance vestibule.

Essential to the enhancements will be relocation of the 24/7 Police Communications Center, currently housed in the small structure at the main entrance to campus, into a secure facility within West Hall. The structure at the university’s entrance will be unstaffed after the relocation of the Police Communications Center. While it will appear to a more open campus experience, the main entrance will remain under the watchful eye of numerous cameras including Flock Safety license plate readers. Also, information and wayfinding for campus visitors will be available inside the Brother Paul French, FSC Learning Resource Center (LRC) and the Welcome Center (WC).

LUPD will maintain an office in the ground floor of the Learning Resource Center for general inquires, parking permit assistance, student identification cards, lost & found, and the Emergency Planning Coordinator office.

Police officers will continue to maintain a 24/7 patrol presence throughout campus supported by campus safety officers and campus-wide video surveillance.

LUPD should be fully operating out of West Hall by November 1, with some personnel and equipment already having been moved into the building.
